The case
In July 2025, two French nationals in their twenties, described in court as cryptocurrency millionaires, traveled to London. They were ambushed in the east of the city and held in a flat for more than two days while a gang demanded roughly $150,000 in digital assets. Under coercion they transferred about $30,000. In August 2026, a jury at Inner London Crown Court convicted six men on charges including conspiracy to blackmail and false imprisonment. Reporting indicates the operation was directed from abroad over a messaging app by a figure who remains at large, while local crews carried out the physical work.
We are deliberately restrained about what happened inside that flat. The details are in the public record and they are grim. They are also beside the point of this briefing. What matters for prevention is everything that happened before the ambush.
